What is JagCHAT?
Jag-Lovers are a group of people from all over the world who have one interest in common: Jaguar cars. We have created and continue to run very successful discussion lists for enthusiasts since 1996 and a Web-based Forum system since 2002. We now have without doubt the most extensive archives of Jaguar related material available to anyone across the entire Internet. Our current user base consists of 71,988 Registered Members worldwide plus many more casual visitors.

JagCHAT is a new web-based chat or messaging system allowing you to communicate with other Jag-lovers' users in real-time. It is unusual in that there is no additional software required past your web Browser and its built-in JavaScript support. You don't have to install any programs and we don't load ANY extra files on your own computer at all, or require use of possibly intrusive languages like Java.

And, even if you aren't connected, you won't miss anything! Unlike other Chat systems, we store everything on the server so you can see what's been happening while you were away or when you first join a Room. We've even provided an archive viewing facility.

IMPORTANT: Because it's new, we can't guarantee it'll work for you yet! Before you attempt to use JagCHAT! please ensure that we support your Browser!

Do I need to Register to use JagCHAT?
To use JagCHAT! you must first be Registered in our Forums (see link on the menu at the top of this page) Note that JagCHAT! requires a unique Forum Nickname no longer than 12 characters - you'll be requested to change yours if either none exists or it's currently longer than 12 characters when you first enter JagCHAT!

JagCHAT! is an extended facility available only to existing JagForum/Jag-lovers members who have also made a voluntary monetary donation since August 2004 to help support the maintenance and continued advancement of Jag-lovers facilities.

Additionally, you must be in good standing with the Jag-lovers Adminstrators [you'll already know if you are not] and have agreed to our standard Conditions that you will be or were referred to and sent during Registration.

Note that you only require one registration (a single e-mail address) to access our Forums and JagCHAT! and all our other facilities from any terminal across the world. If you have satisfied the three conditions above, you should be able to use Jag Chat right now via the menu option you'll see near the top of many pages - nothing else is required!

PLEASE refer to the next section on Browser support BEFORE attempting access. We do NOT guarantee JagCHAT! will work with any browsers other than thoses stated as usable here.

Does JagCHAT! support my Browser?
JagCHAT! is a complex program that pushes your Browser past its normal limits. We are currently only fully supporting Microsoft Internet Explorer V6.0 and later (recent earlier versions may also work). Other browers may or may not work and we will endeavour to support these as time progresses. If a Browser proves impossible to use and we know about it, JagCHAT! will prevent you using it anyway and will refer you to this page.

We regret we are unable to inform you if your specific browser will work - we are however aware of issues or otherwise with certain browsers as follows [we welcome additional info for this section]:

[Windows OS (Win98 => XP)]
Internet Explorer (as of v6.0)
Functions well. No known issues

Crazy Browser (as of v1.0.5)
Functions well. No known issues

Avant Browser (as of v9.0.1)
Functions well. No known issues

FireFox (as of v0.9.3)
Functions well but may have some issues with occasional connection loss (just reconnect, you won't lose any data), sounds may not always work. Status bar sometimes remains at 100% with busy hourglass due to our background timers (hopefully now fixed)

Netscape (as of v7.1)
Functions well. Status bar often remains at 100% with busy hourglass due to our background timers. Some apparent window writing problems noticeable while typing but not problematic

Netscape Navigator (v4.7.0)
Problematic. One user reports okay, another reports continual [exception] crashes. Hence NOT SUPPORTED

Netscape Navigator (as of v6.2.1)
Functions well. Frames show up with white borders where they should not

Opera (as of v6/7)
Problematic. Has a major problem handling the modes used by JagCHAT!! Definitely NOT SUPPORTED

[Mac OS]
No info yet but we'd like to hear from Mac users who try this....

Does JagFORUM use Cookies?
Yes - and you will be unable to use JagCHAT! if you disable these or have a browser that does not support them. We use them for security and to help ease your movement round the Forums

Does JagCHAT! use JavaScript?
Yes - and you will be unable to use JagCHAT! if you disable JavaScript or have a browser that does not support it fully.

Are there any Topics that are not allowed?
Yes. In common with our mailing lists and Forums and bearing in mind the international nature of our Community, please do not discuss topics related to Politics, Gun Control or Religion or Sex - there are plenty of other places on the Internet that are happy to accept such discussions.

We try to keep each Room 'on topic' with messages related to that Room and Jaguars wherever possible. You must not post adverts in any of our Rooms - doing so will result in an instant and permanent ban. The Rooms each have Automatic Robot Administrators as well as real Moderators keeping an eye on things. If a Moderator or Robot asks you to do something, plaase respect that request. Failure to do so my result in permanent barring from all Jag-lovers facilities.

Note also that YOU are totally responsible for your own messages and their content, whatever that may be. This is NOT an anonymous Chat - all messages are recorded permanantly against your registered e-mail You should exercise extreme caution when making remarks about another user that could be interpreted in any way as defamatory. This includes adverse remarks concerning Vendors - these MUST be kept out of the Rooms. If you have a dispute with anyone including a Vendor, keep it private. You have been warned.

How do I use JagChat?
[DRAFT]
We've made JagCHAT! as simple as possible to use while providing you with useful facilities. Below is a screen shot of a typical Browser that supports frames with the JagCHAT! area appearing above the normal Forum page.

You invoke this page via this URL [NOTE: if you are not a Forum member and/or are not logged on, you'll be kicked back to this page if you select the URL!]:
Load JagCHAT!

Typical JagCHAT! page
We've marked the various areas with letters so we can describe what function each part has -
here's the tour with detailed explanations:

Message listing area
A The main listing area where the messages from other users appear - since this is a browser, they appear in reverse order, latest at the top. If we find we can support it on your terminal, the times shown will be in Local Time - otherwise they will be the time they were received at the Jag-lovers server which is in Bergen, Norway.

At the top of this area (E) are icons for the four Rooms with most recent activity in order, left to right - you can select the icon to go to another Room at any time.

The drop down list lets you select how many messages appear in the list. The default is 50 which gives the fastest refresh. Higher figures are possible but slow down the refresh if you are using a dial-up or other restricted bandwidth connection. The minimum is 10 - this gives a very fast refresh for only the most recent messages. You can either increase the figure to see more or use the Archive Viewer to read any day's chat in any room at your leisure.

Very recent message (a few minutes) appear in red text (other than your own which always appear black). Messages from other users appear in blue text.

If you want to read scrollback then use the Archive Viewer since any new message will cause the list to revert to the latest message at the top and you'll lose your reading position.

Message entry area
B The text entry area where you type your messages. You can type up to 200 characters per message - The count in the small box shows you how many characters you have left. Hit ENTER/RETURN to send your message. If you find that this causes a new line in the box rather than sending the message, use the icon and your mouse instead.

Certain characters and phrases are trapped - please limit your input to plain text only - we do not allow scripting or HTML tags, other than <B> and <I> in the Rooms.

Some 'smiley' icons are recognised and the room will convert their text representations into the appropriate icons:

Users Online info area
C Names or aliases of the users who have been online in JagCHAT! in the past few minutes. Note that JagCHAT! will truncate any Forum Nickname longer than 12 characters so you may want to keep this in mind when choosing one - or edit your existing nickname. If you turn Country Flags on, this section displays a small flag for each country online and groups the users against them

ChatRoom Status area
D Shows the current status of each Room in the JagCHAT! system. This updates periodically depending on activity and shows you which rooms have had recent activity. Keys to the colours of the envelope icons are shown at the bottom of this area. The envelope icons themselves have no selectable function. The icon shows which Room you are currently in.

Select the icon to change to another Room from those listed. You can only be in one Room at any moment.

If we find we can support it on your terminal, the time will be your Local Time and updates every minute.

Disconnect message
Lost Chat Connection Please RESTART page [IE F5]
JagCHAT! relies on a remote connection to the Jag-lovers server in Bergen, Norway being available all the time from your location. There will be times when this connection fails for whatever reason. In this case, JagCHAT! will attempt one reconnection - if this fails you'll see the message above. Assuming the problem was momentary, you can reconnect by reloading the page (F5 in Internet Explorer etc). You will NOT lose any messages since we store them all remotely and they'll reappear once you reconnect successfully.

Resizing the JagCHAT! area

You can change the area allocated to JagCHAT by dragging the frame handle associated with the area (shown with a yellow arrow in the image above) upwards or downwards. Depending on your browser, you might be unable to make it very small and it may stop around the Users Online area.

Note that you cannot run JagCHAT! in its own window - it has to remain integrated with the Forum view.

Robots and Administration
We try to keep each Room 'on topic' with messages related to that Room and Jaguars wherever possible. You must not post adverts in any of our Rooms - doing so will result in an instant and permanent ban. The Rooms each have Automatic Robot Administrators as well as real Moderators keeping an eye on things. If a Moderator or Robot asks you to do something, please respect that request. Failure to do so my result in permanent barring from all Jag-lovers facilities. Frequent use of Profanity will permanently eject you from this facility - please respect other users' feelings.

JagCHAT! Archive Viewer

The Archive Viewer allows you to look at older messages in any of the available Rooms. When you first open it, the window displays messages from the current chatroom and today's date if any exist. Otherwise you need to first select the room you want from the left hand drop down list - the window will then refresh and load the Date drop down with all dates where the Room was active. Selecting any date will display the available entries. They display in normal (earliest first) order in this archive display.

Note: this is a PopUp window. You need to allow pops on the jag-lovers.org domain if you have software that traps popups.

Miscellaneous problems and tips
Frame Navigation with Forums
You'll probably find that your Forums navigation in Browsers like IE and others that use the Backspace key will no longer work reliably in a framed environment and you'll have to use the various navigation links provided within the Forums pages themselves while using JagCHAT!

IE clicking while using JagCHAT!
If you experience lots of clicking sounds while using JagCHAT! with Internet Explorer (and possibly other browsers), this is caused by sounds being played during the Navigation Start and End events. As we use multiple frames, this causes multiple sounds. To stop this go to Control Panel and (in XP but may be different in other browsers) turn off both the events:
Sounds and Audio Devices > Sounds > Program Events > Windows Explorer > Start Navigation + Complete Navigation
