| What is JagFORUM? |
|---|
Jag-Lovers are a group of people from all over the world who have one interest in common: Jaguar cars.
We have created and continue to run very successful discussion lists for enthusiasts since
1996 but these are entirely e-mail based. We took the decision to
allow everyone access to these lists some years back via the Web and this is what JagFORUM offers you.
Using JagFORUM you can read and respond to any of the Topics that have been posted
on any of the multiple lists we run (most are related to a particular Jaguar model) - the listings go right back to 1996 although not all Forums are active for posting. We welcome
the true enthusiast and hope you will enjoy the facilities provided
Without any argument, we have the most extensive archives of Jaguar related material available to anyone across
the entire Internet. Jag-lovers site access is currently free and run entirely by volunteers although we are looking
at ways of covering our growing running costs incurred from supplying the needs of a Registered Membership of 40,000+.
We will glady accept your Donations if you are willing to help
us defray our operating costs.

| Do I need to Register to use JagFORUM? |
|---|
While you are free to read the subject lines of posted Forum topics, you must register to read the content and post your own replies and new topics.
Registration is simple and some information we ask for is optional.
However, you MUST provide us with a valid e-mail address (so we can send you a password), your First and Last names and your location (Country/City) as a minimum.
You can optionally provide a NickName to replace your own name if you wish. Once registered and we have your profile,
you can edit your personal profile at any time after you are logged on via the Edit Profile link on the page menus.
We also require that you agree to our standard Conditions that you will be referred to during Registration.
Note that you only require one registration (a single e-mail address) to use our Forums from any terminal across the world.
|
| |
| Does JagFORUM use Cookies? |
|---|
| Yes - and you will be unable to use JagFORUM if you disable these or have a browser that does not support them.
We use them for security and to help ease your movement round the Forums
|
| |
| I haven't received my password |
|---|
Your password should arrive within 10 minutes of you clicking the submit
button on the registration page. On rare occasion, though, Internet
traffic may be high or software or hardware maintenance taking place on
our servers, so give it an hour or two before you start to wonder. The
same is true of posts to the forums.
Every once in a while, a password is lost in "the ether." If you never
received it or have forgotten what it was, you can request us to resend it.
From any JagFORUM screen, select the "Logon" button beneath the two
pictures. If you previously logged on from this computer, your e-mail
address should already be filled in. Verify that it is correct. If you
have never logged on from this computer, you'll have to enter the e-mail
address. Skip the password line, since you don't know it, and move down
to the "Retrieve password" button. Click that and your password will be
e-mailed to the address above within a few minutes, an hour or two at
most

| |
| I just signed up and/or I can't logon |
|---|
We know from user feedback that Jag-lovers is one of the easiest to use places on the internet and we try to keep it that way!
But you've registered and received your password by return e-mail and now can't logon.
Possible error message:
Invalid e-mail/password combination
First, please make sure you are using your registered e-mail address to identify yourself
- not your user name - and that it is identical to that you used when registering. And that
you are using the password you were sent - any other password or logon you had in the past will NOT work now.
Still no success? When using the correct username and password and if you keep ending up back at the logon window, chances are high that you don't have cookies enabled on your computer or that the time on your computer is not correct. Also, for security reasons
we allow a two hour use after each logon and if your computer local clock or your time zone is incorrect, you may not get any logged on time at all (you may also see repeated 'Session Expired' messages)!
Cookies are tiny bits of information placed on your computer that "remember" things about your last visit and preferences that you set.
They also identify you as you for various areas of JagFORUM. When you logon, the cookies are automatically generated or updated on that
PC. You won't be able to use JagFORUM if you disable these or have a
browser that doesn't support them. Our cookies are NOT a security risk and don't give us
any extra personal information about you that you haven't already freely provided such as your e-mail address that we use to
identify you in forum replies.
If you have difficulty logging on after recently changing your user details, you may need to delete the cookies in your Browser before
you can successfully log on again.
Another possibility is that you registered more than 7 days ago and have never logged on - if
so you will now have been automatically deleted from the system and you need to register again.
Automatic deletion removes users who mistyped or provided e-mail addresses that do not actually exist.
If none of the above helps with a logon problem, please see None of these describe my logon problem, what's next? - this also tells you how
to check if cookies are working on your terminal
|
| |
| I need to change the details I added when registering |
|---|
First, logon. Then select the Edit your profile button that will have appeared above the Forum listings in the centre of the page. You can change
any of your details from here, including whether you receive JagXCHANGE advert notifications, your e-mail address and your Forum signature.
If you have difficulty logging on after recently changing your e-mail address and are repeatedly returned to the Logon screen, you need to delete the cookies in your Browser before
you can successfully log on again.
|
| |
| Why can't I reply to e-mail when I move to a different computer |
|---|
| One of the best features about the forums is that you can access them
from any computer, but the required cookies won't be on the "new"
computer. As far as JagFORUM knows, you are a new user. You don't
have to re-register, you just have to manually logon using the logon
option at the top of the screen. That will install the cookies on that
computer and after that initial logon, you'll access things exactly as
you do from the computer you used to register.
|
| |
| None of these describe my logon problem, what's next? |
|---|
Make a note of any messages on the logon screen that comes up after the
unsuccessful attempt. There may be a red message just above the logon
box. For instance, it might repeatedly say 'Session Expired' if your local time is incorrect. Also, there is sometimes some helpful information at the bottom
just above the green "contact us" area that you should quote. This area will also tell you whether cookies are NOT working on your terminal.
If you see the message
'JagFORUM enabled terminal!' after logon then all is well. Otherwise you'll see 'Your terminal has no JagFORUM Cookie yet - or, if you have
logged on then you have cookies disabled or are not accepting them for some reason or your computer local time is incorrect'.
Also refresh the page - another message will then tell you whether cookies are working or not.
It's very unlikely we can tell you how to solve this problem on your particular terminal remotely so please don't ask us!
Please find a computer literate friend to help you solve the problem locally.
Otherwise, please forward any error messages along with a description of the problem and where
you are experiencing it to the Jag-Lovers help desk.
|
| |
| What does Jag-lovers do with the information I provide, especially my e-mail address? |
|---|
| Jag-lovers will not use your e-mail address or data for any purposes other than internal to the organisation. Jag-lovers is a non-profit making voluntary organisation dedicated to helping the true Jaguar enthusiast. We do not pass your information on to anyone outside the group unless required to do so for legal reasons.
That does not, of course, prevent anyone from joining this forum and manually acquiring your (or anybody's) e-mail address.
We do not hide any e-mail addresses visually from our Registered users once logged on but they are displayed and encoded behind the scenes in such a way
that anyone would have very great difficulty in obtaining them without a lot of manual work - they can't just be copied and pasted.
We may also mail you from time to time on matters connected with this Forum that we feel are of importance to you
|
| |
| Do I have to Logon every time I want to read Forum posts? |
|---|
| No - once registered, a Cookie tells us that you are allowed to read all posts without logging on. If you lose or delete the Cookie, you can get it back simply by logging on again.
You DO need to Logon to add or reply to a Forum message though
|
| |
| Can I advertise in my posts? |
|---|
| No - Jag-lovers does NOT allow any direct advertising in its Forums. Registered users can however place up to three free adverts at a time in our
JagXCHANGE if you need to as long as you are not a Trader - if you are a Trader then JagWEB provides the low cost JagAds.Com for this purpose. Anyone
ignoring these rules will be permanently barred from Jag-lovers. You can add certain information to your signature though - see below.
|
| |
| Can I use a signature on all my posts? |
|---|
| Yes. This is set via your profile and can also show your location on each post if you elect. We suggest your signature shows your car(s) and/or interests so others can readily identify with you.
You may also add a link to your commercial web site (if any) and a contact telephone number in your signature but you must never post commercial adverts within any Forum submissions.
|
| |
| Can I add HTML code or pictures to my posts? |
|---|
HTML is a definite No. There are a number of reasons why we do not permit this, mostly related to site security.
However, if you post pictures to our Photo Album facility
and then include the link that is mailed to you, the pictures from your album entry will appear as selectable thumbnails embedded on the appropriate forum pages.
If you want to know more and get a step by step description with examples, check here
|
| |
| Can I add attachments to my posts? |
|---|
| Again - No. For similar reasons plus they are the ideal way to propagate a virus so we just don't allow them. We have managed our discussion lists since 1996 without attachments and
this has not caused any problems as there are plenty of other ways to get round the need
|
| |
| Why do my posts not appear straight away in the Forum listings? |
|---|
JagFORUM is a web interface into our e-mail based discussion lists. Your post is mailed out to our conventional subscribers as well as appearing in the relevant forum -it takes a few minutes
for this process to complete and that's the reason for the delay. Just be patient and it'll usually appear within 5 minutes. Under exceptional circumstances it can take much longer
Note that recent replies to non-current topics (i.e. topics not covered by the first (Most Recent) page of this forum listing) will appear as new topics on the Most Recent listing page
|
| |
| Why are some posts shown as from 'Anon' in the Forum listings? |
|---|
| Some members do not have a user name and just use their e-mail address as their user name and it's these that appear as 'Anon'. We do not reveal our members' e-mail addresses to users who are not logged on. Once registered and logged on, you will be able to see these addresses in the Topic content
|
| |
| How do I change to the e-mail based equivalent of the Forums? |
|---|
| Forum users do not receive e-mail copies of any Forum topics: your entire interface is via the web [you can request a copy of your outgoing posts be sent to you via e-mail as part of your profile configuration however].
If you want to join our conventional e-mail lists, please refer to our Lists page
|
| |
| Are the Forums moderated? |
|---|
| Our volunteer Administrators have full autonomous control over each list/forum and may make certain requests of you in some cases.
Please observe any such requests, made for everyone's benefit. Please note that our conventional e-mail discussion lists and the Forum equivalent are managed by the same Administrator.
Note also that YOU are totally responsible for your own posts and their content, whatever that may be.
You should exercise extreme caution when posting remarks about another user that could be interpreted in any way as defamatory.
This includes adverse remarks concerning Vendors - these MUST be kept off the forums. If you have a dispute with anyone including a Vendor, keep it private.
|
| |
| What are the pictures at the top of the pages? |
|---|
| These are random Jaguar related images taken mainly from our Photo Album facility. They are general and not necessarily related to the Forum you are viewing
|
| |
| What do the graphics and icons mean? |
|---|
There are a lot of icons designed to help you identify postings - the key below also appears at the bottom of every Forum listing page
All read
New Topic/reply [2] = unread posts
Hot Topic all read
New Hot Topic/replies
Admin Topic (yes, it's a Viking since that's the land where we are based)
PinBoard Topic read
New PinBoard Topic/replies
PinBoard Hot Topic all read
New PinBoard Hot Topic/replies
-
PinBoard
There is now a PinBoard. Admins can choose threads that they think are particularly interesting or relevant and
keep them at the top of the first page listings. There are two types identified by their icons:
is an Admin entry specifically posted by the Forum Admin

indicate Admin initiated PinBoard entries of normal user threads - there are variations on these folder colours but all have a small pin at the top right
There are also two additional NOTICE type entries, not derived from postings, that can be global to all Forums or apply to a specific forum
- these appear at the top of every forum listing page as appropriate:
is an IMPORTANT announcement, usually service affecting
is a general announcement for your information, often concerning a change
-
Hot Threads to Top of Listings

You can choose to have Hot Threads (those with more than a certain number of replies (usually over 15)) automatically shown at the top of the listings on the Pinboard
if you want rather than appear in their normal position. If you use this option, such threads will appear at the top as long as
they are current (have replies in the last few days). Hot Threads appear in their normal order when Compact List Display is selected.
-
Full / Compact List Display
The normal display mode is Full - all the information available to users for a Forum index appears on the page. If you find this too
cluttered, you can select Compact List Display. This removes a lot of information you don't need all the time and moves the thread
listing much closer to the top of the page. Hot Threads are disabled but appear in the listings in the normal way. The Pinboard is disabled.
-
View Thread Contents in Reverse Date order
Until now, viewing the contents of a thread by selecting the Title text always displayed them in post order so
that the latest ones in long threads were at the end. You can now alternatively select the folder Icon and this displays the latest postings first!
-
Viewed Posts tracking
9 [3]
JagFORUM knows every individual post each user has read. Whenever you view a post, we record which ones you viewed (viewing a thread marks all of that threads posts as read)
and the various icons shown above reflect the overall state of that post or thread. The data is held remotely so will be correct wherever you view the forums from.
Note that this recording for this did not start until towards the end of August 2002 so will not reflect all posts you have ever read if you were a member prior to that date.
Unread posts still outstanding are shown against each thread by an entry such as 3 [2] indicating the post has two unread replies out of three.
It can also show 4 [5] which means there are 4 replies plus the original post to read.

| |
| Where can I find answers to questions about the cars? |
|---|
For Jaguar technical, repair, and maintenance questions, see:
- the appropriate Model Pages (Jag-lovers registration not required),
where you can find answers to most common questions about specific models
- search the extensive Jag-lovers Archives (Jag-lovers registration required),
a searchable database of all of the forum and mailing list submissions at Jag-Lovers since 1996
- Register and ask your question in the appropriate Jag-lovers forum
|
| |
| Are there any Topics that are not allowed? |
|---|
| Yes. In common with our mailing lists and bearing in mind the international nature of our Community, please do not post topics discussing or related to
Politics, Gun Control or Religion (subject to further additions) - there are plenty of other places on the Internet that are happy to accept such discussions. We try to keep each Forum
'on topic' with posts related to that Forum and Jaguars wherever possible. You cannot post adverts in any of our Forums (see earlier).
|
| |
| Where are Jag-lovers based? |
|---|
Our servers are based in Europe at the premises of Bitcon (Bergen IT Consult AS) in Bergen, Norway.
We therefore observe European protocols on all posted content. Please remember that Jag-lovers is an international community and that you will
automatically be addressing the people of many countries when you post to our Forums.
Please use the English language wherever possible when posting so that the maximum number of people understand you.
We glady accept your Donations if you are willing to help us defray our operating costs
incurred in supporting our 40,000 plus users and providing 24 hour operation and support.
